In this book I will try to be as honest as possible in exploring different marketing techniques and methods. At times I know that I will make you angry with what I suggest, especial when it goes against what you have been taught and your industry wisdom. If I do make you angry, maybe that is because I’m also making you think.
If this bothers you, then maybe this book is not for you and you shouldn’t read any further.

Understanding Why You Are In Business
Take a moment now to think about why you started your own business. Be honest; there is no right or wrong answer. Be careful to ask yourself specifically why you started your own business…not why you started in your industry.
Which of the following are the real reasons you are in business (you can pick more than one):
- To make more money. If so, how much per year? $_____________
- To feel good about giving others a job
- Because you enjoy risk
- Because you like managing people
- Because you get a kick out of being the boss
- To have more time
- To have more freedom of choice
- To have creative freedom in your profession
- To prove to yourself or someone else that you could do it
- Other (be honest)_______________________
At the end of the day, I believe you are in business to create a particular lifestyle that you deem to be desirable for yourself and your family. This is an important fact to never lose sight of. Stay focused on this. Remind yourself of it, so that you do not wake up one day to find yourself doing the complete opposite of what you started out to do.
As we move forward, let me give you another question to think about:
In a business sense, what are you?
