Networking Questions

Good Morning

I attend a network group that meets for lunch once a week. I do this for a number of reasons including getting lunch, getting out of the office and socializing, and oh yes, getting more business.

This week our chair Hugh Morrison sent out his weekly email and included a few things to think about. I’d like to mention some of them. He asked

  • What is the best way you like to network?
  • What do you think is the best way?
  • What is the best lead for you?
  • What is the best way we or someone can help you in your business?

These are good questions to think about and have answers to before you arrive at a networking event! A few other questions you need to answer beforehand include: What do you want to accomplish at this event? How will you know if this event was a success for you? And, what follow-up do you plan to do?

When at the event, have your 30 second or elevator introduction ready and practiced and keep it to the time limit. If you are at an after hours mixer type event keep your introduction very short.

When you are talking to people, ask a question and then listen! Also look at them and pay attention to them; do not look around trying to line up the next person. Here are a few questions you can use to break the ice and get them talking:

  • What part of the world are you in charge of?
  • When you are not networking how do you spend most of your time?
  • This one is from Hugh: “Did you start your business or do you do what you do because of a love for a related hobby, or just a love for the industry you are in?”

By being prepared you will be successful at any networking type of event that you attend.
