Now that you have a true idea of why you are in business, let’s move on. The next question to answer is, “In a business sense, what are you?”
Nine times out of ten when I ask this question, the answer is,
“I am a plumber” or whatever other profession or occupation you have. Fundamentally, this self-image must change right now!
From now on, you must begin to see yourself as a Marketer who has chosen your particular field or profession as a vehicle to personal and financial success.
“But I don’t know anything about marketing, or I don’t like to market, or I hired someone to market my business, I just want to do ____.”
That’s what I hear. When you first started your business, didn’t you do the marketing to bring in customers? You are the company’s chief marketing officer. No one can do the job better than you can. You know the business better than anyone else. If you want to reach your goals, then you’re going to have to take on this role.
Much of what you will have to do is going to require you to step outside of your business…at least mentally if not physically. You must begin working on it, not just in it. This will become much easier when you begin to change your internal belief systems about what your business function is. I mean, really change it. I have never met a successful person who identifies solely with a single field of expertise.
Now that you’ve acknowledged you are the chief marketing person for your business, we can get into the real secrets of marketing.
Next week – Your Customers.
