Hunter or Farmer

Good Morning (Contact First Name),
Spring is around the corner. This Sunday (really Saturday night) we move the clocks forward by an hour, giving us an extra hour of daylight in the evening. I like the daylight in the evening so I look forward to it. Yes, I know all the arguments against, but I still like it. It’s one of the signs that spring is coming. Another is that some of the trees are starting to bloom, which means allergy session will be here soon. But I know winter is not over just yet.
Growing up in Buffalo (New York not Texas) we knew that winter was not over until the last snow storm around March 17th. It was the last gasp of winter. Here in north Texas, instead of a snow storm, we have a last freeze. Which means I have to get to work to get the vegetable garden ready as well as the rest of the yard! (Anyone want to help cut down very large bushes?) As I stated, this is the time I get my vegetable garden ready. I  turn the soil, add compost and then put in the plants and seeds. I play farmer.
So what does this have to do with marketing your business?
Business owners can be either farmers or hunters. Most business owners are hunters when it comes to getting customers. They make calls to get new business and spend time and money to get customers. Their main goal is to close the sale now and will do almost anything to close. If they don’t close that day, like the hunter, they don’t eat that day.
A few business owners and great real estate agents who come to mind are farmers. Like me and my garden, they plant seeds or starter plants, water, nurture them, and tend to them until they are ready for harvesting.
They find people who show some interest, contact them, find out what if any needs they have. If they are ready to buy, that’s great, but most will not be. In that case, then they follow up and drip market to them until they are ready to buy. Just like the farmer, the business owner will nurture them until they’re ready! And in the end these business people eat every day!
Till next week,
