Getting Your Name Wrong

Good Morning

We all like to be acknowledged, usually by being called by our name. So when people can’t get your name right, are you really going to pay any attention to their message?

My friend Larry, got an email (which he sent me) that started “Hi Lar.” I’ve known Larry for over 20 years maybe closer to 30 years, and as far as I know he has never gone by or used “Lar.” When I emailed him back about it calling him “Lar” he said he doesn’t know about the “Lar” thing, and that email sender reminds him of a used car salesman and makes Larry feel like he’s just trying to sell his program. The email sender is selling a sales program and one of the elements is building trust.

I got mail for years addressed to “Philip Groves” I have never used the name in my mailing (great way to track what lists you end up on – email me if your want to know more). Mr. Groves has even followed me to my now six-year-old new location. I also have gotten phone calls for him.

Do you really think someone is going to do business with a business or a person who can’t get their name right? If you don’t know a person’s name, then use a general salutation or no salutation. How can you get people to like, know and trust you if you can’t get their name right?

Until Next time!
