I was looking up information about social media for this tip and found numerous lists of the top 10 social media. I knew most of them, but one that caught me off guard was QQ. QQ is the parent company of WeChat and is an instant messaging platform that is extremely popular among young Chinese. (It is used in 80 countries and also available in many other languages.) Besides its instant messaging features, it also enables users to decorate their avatars, watch movies, play online games, shop online, blog, and make payments.
Now that you know what QQ is, let me list the top trending social media apps.

This list is always changing with apps coming and going depending on what list you view.
As you look over this list you will notice that social media is not all the same, there are social networks, media sharing sites, discussion forums, bookmarking and content curation networks, consumer review networks, blogging and publishing networks, interest-based networks, social shopping networks, sharing economy networks and anonymous social networks.
There are a lot of categories of social media and I have not even gotten into subcategories and tools for managing your social media. So why should you care? You are in all likelihood using the big ones (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat Pinterest) and have your hands full. But are you using the correct type of media for the market you want to reach?
Knowing about the categories of social media and understanding why people use them can open up new idea for engaging with your customer base more effectively.
