My wife just completed the last of a series of on-line courses she needed in order to get her regular teaching certification. The course was Web2.0. For this course she had to create a blog, use Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube and a host of other web apps and connect them to her blog. She had always told me she with not good with this stuff and could never do it. Since this was part of a course that she had to complete in order to continue to teach, she had to get through it and pass. She learned to do most of what she needed by watching videos on the subject matter. By the way, she passed the course with a 100.
Now you’re thinking, what does this have to do with marketing my business? Aside from me bragging about my wife, a lot.
Marketing is about learning to integrate and use media to communicate to your target market in a way that they will accept and to which it will respond. If your market is using Pinterest, Instagram, and Google hangouts and you’re using newspapers and Valpak you may 1) never reach them and 2) go broke.
By matching the medium you advertise on to the medium that they use, you can attract them and then direct them to a more private medium where you can sell to them in a competitive vacuum. You can take them from on-line (lots of noise and distraction) to off-line (undivided attention).
Not only must you match your message to your audience, you must also match the media to them as well, provided you are targeting the correct demographics.
Mismatched messages: I was adding some businesses to a database, and as I was typing in their information, I noticed that some of these people are still using gmail, yahoo, and a bunch of other services for their business email accounts. They have web sites, but are either too cheap to get an email account that is associated to their web address or they really do not want to present a professional image to the world. Maybe they just want to tell the world, “Hey, don’t hire me, I’m just playing at this.”
