Marketing Works

The job of marketing and its subset advertising is to convince you that you want and need something and you have to buy it NOW! Whether you really need it or want it.

A friend of mine who sells promotional items sends out an email on different subjects and then ties the subject to items he sells. This week’s email dealt with Hatch Chiles. For everyone who does not know about Hatch Chiles, they come from the small town of Hatch, New Mexico, of about 1648 people located 83 miles northwest of El Paso (yes, out in the middle of nowhere).

This town has made their chiles a big thing. Up here in north Texas and all the way across to the other end of Texas, the grocery stores make a big thing out of Hatch Chiles, which are available only once a year in summer. People buy into this and stock up on the chiles and all the products that are associated them.

By the way, if you want to learn more about Hatch, NM, the chiles and see the email, which you should see, then send an email to innovativeconceptstx@gmail.com and ask Larry to send you “Hatch Chilis what do you do with them things” email.

Another example is the holiday Cinco de Mayo. Here in north Texas and other parts of the U.S. it’s a big holiday, but in Mexico it’s a minor holiday. The beer companies and bars/restaurants took it and made it into a national U.S. party day. We are now told we need to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a beer or two. Just like we need to buy Hatch Chiles in August!

These are just two of many examples of how marketing can be used to convince people that they need and want something that they really don’t need or want.

What can you turn into a major event and tie it in to your products/ services or how can you tie into an already existing event?
