You’re Gross and It’s Costing You

Are you losing business when you open your mouth? When you walk into a room? When you’re at a networking event or other event?
At lunch the other day I spotted a gentleman shoveling in his food. That reminded me of a business owner friend who told me that during the hiring process she and her husband take the final candidate and their spouse out to dinner to see how they do. This is the last step of the hiring process and the successful candidate will have to interact with customers and the public. My friend does not want to hire someone who will embarrass the company and cost them business.
That got me to thinking. Then today I got an email from a marketing publication inviting me to a webinar on business etiquette. Subjects that will be covered include: “Appearance counts: the proper way to look, sound and even smell and four non-verbal indicators of good business manners.”
In today’s business world, business (and people’s jobs) can be lost as a result of poor etiquette and manners. Knowing how to act, how to handle yourself – and how not to – can mean the difference between success and failure.
Are you losing business because you chew with your mouth wide open, you smell of smoke, your cell phone is more important than the person you’re talking to, your parents never taught you any manners, you forgot them or don’t use them because they are too much trouble?
Correct the situation now. Buy a book and/or take a class. No one, including potential customers, likes to be around ill-mannered people.
