Swipe Files, Why You Should Have One or More

Good Morning
When talking with new clients about what they want as far as advertising/marketing their business, I ask if they have examples of what they like. In most cases I get a no or a hmm, or what are you talking about?
I tell them that they should have a swipe file of things they like and another of things they hate.
I explain that a swipe file is any advertising or marketing materials that you like. It could be a headline from a sales letter, a graphic or an image from a post card, the layout from a newspaper ad or maybe some text from an email. The same goes for what you dislike.
I try to keep mine all in one area, so I can find it when I need it. I know one person who keeps theirs organized by different categories and industries in file cabinets.
So what do you do with this stuff? When you need an idea to kick-start development of a marketing campaign, go through your swipe file. There is an old saying that goes, there is nothing original, it’s all been done before. So why not see what has been done before and get some ideas?
From now on, instead of sorting your mail over the trash can, read it all and then sort it into 3 piles: stuff you like, stuff you don’t like and trash; trash should be the smallest pile. By having these files you will save a lot of money. Want to know why? Just reply to this email.
