How Dare They Do That, That’s Outrageous!

It’s been on the TV news, on the radio and it should be in the papers in the next few days.

What is it that made the news? Free Pizza! Yes, Free Pizza! On June 5th from 5pm to 8pm, you can get a free large pepperoni pizza from Pizza Patron if you walk in and order it in Spanish (pizza, por favor).

This is the same company that a few years ago let people pay for pizzas using pesos.

This is a great example of outrageous advertising that’s very successful. Everyone is talking about them, they got maybe close to $100,000 worth of free advertising and more people now know that they exist. When they decided to accept pesos in 2007 it got over 500 million media impressions in the U.S. alone, that’s for 102 locations in 7 states.

And what does it cost them? The pizza sells for $4.99. Real cost maybe about $2.00-$2.50 per pizza. They are spending $2.50 per customer. If they are really on top of their game they would hand out a bounce-back coupon with each pizza to bring the customer back in within a week or two.

Another interesting fact about Pizza Patron is that they are located in predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods!

Pizza Patron took something that happens every day in their stores (people ordering their food in Spanish) and combined it with a free give-away with limited hours and made it into regional if not national news while boosting their exposure along the way.

Now what can you do to create outrageous advertising that will not only get you noticed, but bring in paying customers?
